Residential Halls

Residential Halls are an integral part of the University's holistic education, living with peers from diverse backgrounds, fostering their personal, social, and intellectual growth. Each residential hall has its own distinct traditions and spirit, which students enthusiastically embrace, instilling a strong sense of belonging and community. Non-resident students can engage with the vibrant hall community by joining affiliated memberships.

Richard Charles Lee Hall (R.C. Lee Hall)

R.C. Lee Hall embodies our motto, "Liberty with Responsibility, Unity in Diversity," fostering responsible leadership and a positive embrace of differences. We believe diversity enhances our capacity to contribute, encouraging hallmates to explore new opportunities and freely choose their paths to enrich the community.  We offer a supportive environment for academic excellence, with our Tutorial Team and Residential Academic Advisors readily available to guide students in academic and career planning.     With a vibrant calendar of events—including community service, workshops, and visits—R.C. Lee Hall provides HKU students with a transformative university experience that harmonizes individuality and unity.   In 2024–2025, R.C. Lee achieved 1st Runner-up in the Overall Cultural Interhall Competition and secured awards in choir, drama, men’s volleyball, women’s handball, men’s table tennis, and women’s hockey.

Simon K.Y. Lee Hall

Simon K. Y. Lee Hall is dedicated to creating a diverse community and inspiring our "SKYers" to soar through numerous sports, cultural events, and community service projects. Our hall not only offers accommodation to HKU students but also caters their social, cultural, and educational needs by providing a supportive and comfortable environment and fostering a sense of belonging.   Our hall encourages cultural and intellectual exchange among students from various backgrounds by nurturing a robust community and facilitating networking opportunities. Residents are provided with a wide range of activities, teams and societies that enable them to hone leadership skills and forge life-long friendships. This also inspires students to discover and appreciate diverse cultures, which helps enrich the multicultural ambiance at HKU and contributes to the university's international standing.   Our Hall slogan “Active and Sincere” encourages SKYers to be committed to hall life, to open up oneself, to build relationships and, in short, to be involved and willing to contribute to our community.  The Hall has a warm and supportive atmosphere, and many of its residents regard it as “a home away from home”. 

Lee Shau Kee Hall

Lee Shau Kee Hall opened in August 2005, offering modern accommodations for 300 students. Each floor features a pantry for informal cooking and socializing. The Hall includes a Multi-Purpose Hall, a Student Association Room, and various meeting spaces for intellectual and social interactions. A key aspect of Lee Shau Kee Hall is its international atmosphere, with over a third of residents hailing from twelve different nationalities. Students pursue diverse academic disciplines, enriching the community's experiences. As the University embraces internationalization, the number of students from various backgrounds is expected to rise. Halls of residence, including Lee Shau Kee Hall, play a vital role in whole-person education, providing more than just living spaces. They foster learning and personal growth, offering unique experiences that contribute to the University’s goal of becoming a global institution. For this, we owe gratitude to Dr. Lee Shau Kee.

Suen Chi Sun Hall

Suen Chi Sun Hall, established in 2005, is a vibrant and inclusive residential hall dedicated to fostering a supportive and enriching environment for undergraduate students at HKU.  More than just a place to live, SCSH provides a foundation for holistic student development. It promotes academic focus, personal growth, and the formation of meaningful, lasting friendships. Our welcoming community is built on the values of openness, respect, and mutual support.  Residents are encouraged to engage actively in hall life through a diverse range of cultural and sports teams, open to students of all experience levels. These activities offer valuable opportunities for self-expression, community involvement, and cross-cultural exchange.  A unique personality-based floor allocation system ensures that students are placed in a compatible and supportive living environment, where they can connect with peers who share similar interests and values. Suen Chi Sun Hall warmly welcomes students seeking a dynamic residential experience that complements their academic journey and contributes to a rewarding university life. 

Lady Ho Tung Hall

Lady Ho Tung Hall offers a rich historical tradition in a modern living environment. Founded in 1951 with a gift from Sir Robert Ho Tung in memory of his wife Lady Margaret Ho Tung, LHTH brings together East and West to create a residential atmosphere rooted in Hong Kong tradition and looking to the future.   As HKU’s only female residential hall, sisterhood and leadership are emphasized throughout hall education, and all residents are encouraged to participate in hall activities. LHTH is strong in academics and athletics with multiple sports teams, residents also join cultural teams and interest groups. Through engaging in hall activities, hallmates develop strong bonds with one another, build a sense of belonging, and develop life and leadership skills. 

St. John’s College

St. John's College aims to nurture future leaders with the open mind, moral principles and ethical values, as well as physical robustness to develop their intellectual and critical thinking skills. It will allow St. Johnians to go beyond their own self-perceived limitations and better serve society.

Starr Hall

Starr Hall, located in the Jockey Club Student Village I on Pokfulam Road, was established in 2001 with funding from the Starr Foundation. The Foundation was created in 1955 by Cornelius Vander Starr, a pioneer in international insurance. It focuses on grants in education, healthcare, culture, and the environment. Starr Hall is a 24-floor building that hosts about 500 male and female students, including local and international students. The hall is committed to promoting communication and interaction between students with different backgrounds. Its goal is to foster cultural exchange and community life, helping students explore themselves through diverse interactions. Living together with people from different backgrounds provides students with many opportunities for personal growth and understanding of different cultures.

Morrison Hall

Morrison Hall cultivates an environment of respect and inclusivity, enriching academic experiences and making university life truly memorable. Established in the early 1910s, Morrison Hall is one of HKU’s most storied residential halls, blending rich tradition with vibrant energy. With 300 places available for both male and female undergraduates and postgraduates, Morrison Hall promotes the development of essential skills like leadership, communication, and self-management. The Hall's Students’ Association (SA) plays a vital role in organizing events, managing admissions, and connecting residents with the administration. 

Lee Hysan Hall

Lee Hysan Hall, located at 6 Sassoon Road, is the only co-educational hall in the University of Hong Kong. It was built in 1992 and was named “Lee Hysan Hall” after the generous donation from the Lee family, and Richard Charles Lee Ming Chak is the son of Lee Hysan.   The year before its completion, Old Halls was demolished. Therefore, Professor Cheng Kai Ming, the former warden of Lee Hysan Hall, the first tutor Mr. Chan Yiu Hong and some of the first batch of residents all came from Old Halls. Lee Hysan Hall inherited some of the traditions of Old Halls, such as the "village" system, the village name "DragonLane", the lion dance team and the mascot of the hall, the "tiger".   Lee Hysan Hall Students’ Association is the largest student organisation among all the halls, evolved from the Student Liaison Group in the early days of the hall. Every year, the Students’ Association organizes a number of hall activities for hall members to participate in, and also assists the Office in handling some of the daily operations of the hall. “Halcyon”, the cabinet of the 33rd Students’ Association, is established this year.   Lee Hysan Hall provides various cultural and sports teams for members to join, allowing them to showcase their strengths and achieve many outstanding results. In the 2024-2025 academic year, Lee Hysan Hall male’s badminton and softball teams won the runner-ups.

Ricci Hall

Ricci Hall is to provide an environment in which students, living in brotherhood, can grow in a balanced way in maturity, spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially, culturally and physically; where they can deepen their knowledge of moral values and concern for people especially of HKSAR and China, inspired by the example of our Jesuit Patron, Father Matteo Ricci – like him, using the gifts they have received, in generous service of others. 均衡成長德智體群  利氏精神  服務他人 

University Hall

Nestled within an elegant 19th Century Neo-Gothic Castle and fortified by a formidable alumni network, University Hall (U-Hall) is home to 110 bright souls destinated to become gentlemen and future leaders. Since 1956, U-Hall has cultivated social responsibility by actively encouraging student leadership at every level. Our tightly knit community builds brotherhood that transcends wealth, race, culture and age.  Beyond excelling in sports and laurels, U-Hall offers unique experiences rooted in Hong Kong and HKU’s heritage, including the Pokfulam Village Fire Dragon Dance - a local intangible cultural heritage, monthly High Table Dinners, and the vibrant Halloween Haunted House.  Dining is central to the U-Hall experience. Our residents enjoy casual meals and stimulating intellectual discourse in the Dining Hall, once a chapel, now glowing under magnificent chandeliers. Nearby, the serene Pokfulam Reservoir and Country Park provides a tranquil, nature-immersed environment perfect for reflection, study and physical training.  

Swire Hall

Swire Hall, established on 11 November 1980, is one of the thirteen residential halls of The University of Hong Kong. Named in recognition of the Swire Group's generous contribution to its construction, the Hall is uniquely located within the Swire Building at the eastern edge of the Main Campus, directly above the Fong Shu Chuen Amenities Centre and beside the University Museum and Art Gallery. Swire Hall is known for its student-led governance, encouraging responsible, self-initiated, and inclusive participation. Its prime location on the Main Campus provides easy access to lecture halls, dining facilities, the University's only Halal-certified restaurant, and prayer room. The Hall supports a vibrant student life through active involvement in sports, cultural, and service groups. Since its establishment, Swire Hall has proudly supported students from diverse and often underrepresented backgrounds, empowering them to thrive in university and beyond with confidence, community, and purpose.

Wei Lun Hall

Welcome to Wei Lun Hall, a dynamic and welcoming residential community nestled at 6D Sassoon Road and proudly managed by the University of Hong Kong. Guided by our inspiring motto, “We Begin with People,” we are dedicated to creating a supportive environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and personally. D. H. Chen College

Karson Choi College

Chi Sun College

Chi Sun College is a student residence at The University of Hong Kong with a balanced population between undergraduates and postgraduates. It is also culturally diverse with a large ratio of non-local students.   Founded in 2012, the College represents the latest commitment from the University to transform and revitalise residential education. Chi Sun bears a clear mission to nurture an inclusive community of freely enquiring minds, and tasks itself in providing the most suitable environment for such.    A highlight of our College is the Chi Sun Library, which is a 24-hour learning and collaboration space, featuring quiet studying, co-working and lounging areas, reading corners, a mini theatre and a pool room. The space is also fully-equipped to serve as a teaching hub for College-taught programmes such as speaker events, discussion forums and many more.  

Shun Hing College

Shun Hing College at Jockey Club Student Village III of The University of Hong Kong seeks to build an inclusive and vibrant model of community engagement by fostering exchanges and common experiences among our residents. Professor David S. Lee, an award-winning teacher that is active broadly in the areas of ethics, fintech, leadership, law, and corporate governance, leads the college in encouraging civic participation and mutual learning among students from a wide range of backgrounds.  Housing both undergraduates and postgraduate students, Shun Hing College encourages residents to consider their engagement with one another, the fast-changing neighbourhood of Kennedy Town, and the wider world while pursuing a balance of academics and social life. New College

The main ethos of the New College is the environment and sustainability. Through hands-on experience and discussions, we provide an active learning platform for our students to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills in sustainable living and, at the same time, nurture their love and care for nature. We encourage residents to think outside the box and be exposed to disciplines beyond their academic fields, and learn to be more aware of the overall well-being of the larger community. There are also plenty of opportunities for experiential learning and knowledge exchange through interactions with the residential population comprising staff, visiting scholars, and students from diverse walks of life. College 1

College 1 is guided by two core values: building a culture of community contribution and promoting student well-being. Postgraduate Residences

Dedicated postgraduate housing is available for postgraduate students, offering a more mature living environment tailored to the needs of advanced scholars. Through these alternative housing options, CEDARS aims to enhance the overall residential experience and support the academic and personal growth of the postgraduate community.

Graduate House

Graduate House is located in the Main Campus on No. 3 University Drive.  It is a state of art building completed in March 1998, and was awarded a Silver Medal – the highest recognition of architectural design excellence by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects.  The residential block consists of 12 storeys providing 188 Single rooms and 9 Twin rooms for full-time registered postgraduate students of the University.   The Graduate House Management Team warmly welcomes you to our Graduate House family! Through your contribution, participation and creativity, we hope to make our Graduate House not only a place to dwell and study, but more importantly a place to make new friends from all over the world and to experience a true sense of community.

Ching Lin Terrace Residence

HKU has revitalized the former Hon Wah College into a new postgraduate residence. The nine-story flat-type residence, most of which features single rooms, houses 105 students. It also features 13 en-suite single rooms (with double bed) for postgraduate students. The Residence is located in No. 10 Ching Lin Terrace. The area consists of a small number of residential buildings and a Chinese Lo Pan Temple (Grade I Historic Building). The building sits quietly within the context of the site and it is surrounded by To Li Garden, Jade Lotus, Greenview Court and Hee Wong Terrace. It has been awarded LEED (Silver) and BEAM Plus (Gold) certifications in 2014.

Mui Fong House

Mui Fong House situated between Mui Fong Street and Kwai Heung Street in Sai Ying Pun, this student residence managed by CEDARS was finished in 2022. The 24-storey building primarily consists of single rooms and can accommodate up to 250 students. Students who wish to enjoy independent living off-campus and experience being part of the local community will find space in this residence for quiet study, hosting events and socializing with new friends.

Other University-admin housing

CEDARS offers a selection of apartments and flats that are available for students with an alternative living experience in Hong Kong. We prioritize newly arriving non-local students to help you settle into Hong Kong with ease, while all other students will also be welcomed.

Student Flats

Student Flats (SF) can accommodate up to 72 full-time students on a sharing basis in 12 self-contained flats with double and triple-shared rooms. All flats come with en-suite bathrooms and are fully furnished with bed, wardrobe, study desk, chair, and telephone connection. Each flat also contains a small kitchen area with sink, cupboard, hotplate, microwave oven and refrigerator for the preparation of light meals. 

Non-residential Halls

Students can choose to join a non-residential hall as non-residential members. Each Hall has its own traditions and cultures with students who organize hall events and social activities, plus there are a number of inter-hall events and competition organized every year. 

Lee Chi Hung Hall

Lee Chi Hung Hall is the first and only co-educational non-residential hall in the University of Hong Kong. It is located inside the main campus of the University of Hong Kong. It was founded in 1995 and is named in honour of Mr. Lee Chi Hung so as to thank the Lee's family for their generous donation. Ever since, Lee Chi Hung Hall aims at cultivating unity and a sense of belonging among students through organizing various cultural, sports and social activities in order to achieve all-round education. Being a non-residential hall, Lee Chi Hung Hall not only provides a golden opportunity for their members to grow in all aspects, but also makes the university days much more memorable. Over the past years, Leechians have actively devoted to our hall history, traditions and splendid victories in various tournaments and activities. Lee Chi Hung Hall is definitely a place for nourishing our future leaders and expand our social circle!

Hornell Hall

Hornell Hall (Chinese name: 康寧堂) is the first and only male non-residential undergraduate and graduate hall at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). Hornell Hall was founded on September 24, 1953, and was named after Sir William Hornell, a former Vice-Chancellor of HKU.  Hornell is characterized by its long history, rich traditions, and a brotherhood among past and current members who have led the way in many sports and socially conscious activities at HKU. Our hall is "unique" and "cutting-edge." Working alongside alumni and student members, Hornell Hall offers incredible life experiences that are truly unrivaled!
