Data privacy

The University of Hong Kong ('the University') is committed to meeting internationally-recognised standards of personal data privacy protection, in compliance with the requirements of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. In doing so, it will be ensured that the University's staff comply with the strictest standards of security and confidentiality.
Statement of Practice
The University is dedicated to the secure and ethical handling of personal data. In accordance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, students are informed via the Personal Information Collection Statement that their personal data will be used by Centre for Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) for administrative, educational, academic, and research purposes, as well as for directly related ends. The general requirement of the Ordinance is that personal data should only be used and disclosed with the prescribed consent of the data subject, or for the purpose (or a directly related purpose) for which the data has been collected. In this respect, it is essential to carefully consider whether any use or disclosure of personal data falls within these purposes or other directly related purposes. If there is any doubt, the prescribed consent of the data subject should be obtained. Without students expressing approval, or unless required by law, the personal data collected herein will not be disclosed to third parties other than those specified in the individual personal information collection statement. The Ordinance, however, has provided for certain exemptions on such grounds as prevention of crime, unlawful or seriously improper conduct, and protection of physical or mental health.
